Management of Knee Arthrofibrosis
COURSE TITLE: Management of Knee Arthrofibrosis
COURSE INSTRUCTOR: Sebastiano Nutarelli, PT, MS, PhD Candidate
DATE: Friday, June 19, 2026
DURATION: 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
CEU: 7.5 credits
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Arthrofibrosis, also known as joint contracture, is a pathological wound healing disease characterized by chronic inflammation and fibrosis of connective tissue in and around a joint, resulting in severe pain, marked loss of joint mobility, and diminished functional independence in daily life. Physical therapists are often the first members of the healthcare team to encounter an individual struggling with arthrofibrosis. Thus, early identification of the disease and proper clinical management are integral in preventing and/or minimizing its potential deleterious effects on an individual’s daily function and overall quality of life.
Management of Knee Arthrofibrosis is a 1-day comprehensive continuing education course that specifically focuses on the clinical management and treatment of knee arthrofibrosis (KAF). It will provide participants with evidenced clinical expertise-based foundation, diagnosis schemes, and fully practical treatment guidelines extensively covering all the clinical presentations of this complex orthopedic pathology. It will allow the participant to develop the skills to early diagnose KAF and offer immediate clinical support with specialized programs ensuring the best chance of recovery. A hands-on lab component will also be included in this course.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
Discuss the differences between primary and secondary arthrofibrosis
Evaluate the clinical features of knee arthrofibrosis for its early detection in the rehab clinic
Analyze clear priorities in the specialized rehabilitation of knee arthrofibrosis
Choose appropriate supportive devices in the treatment of knee arthrofibrosis
Describe the pharmacological treatment and various surgical techniques dedicated to the treatment of knee arthrofibrosis
Identify the psychosocial aspects of patients struggling with knee arthrofibrosis
Apply effective communication skills when dealing with patients and their families/care givers
This course has been approved by the Illinois Physical Therapy Association (IPTA) for 7.5 hours.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER:
Sebastiano Nutarelli, PhD Candidate, MS Biomechanics, Sports PT, EOC Clinical Researcher, Sports Rehab co-founder, EUKAF Coordinator
For more than 15 years, Sebastiano has dedicated himself to KAF, an often undiagnosed condition, by attending the operating rooms and rehabilitation departments of the best international orthopaedic and sports medicine clinics, developing an in-depth understanding of the mechanisms, causes, complications, and rehabilitation approaches with the highest chance of success. He’s also part of the Committee of the International Arthrofibrosis Association and a contributor for the KNEEguru.co.uk website for knee rehabilitation with special ‘accent’ on arthrofibrosis and ACL injuries - the latter being the clinical research topic of his ongoing PhD. He co-founded the Sports Rehab PT clinics in Switzerland and, with the aim to help patients affected by such a complex knee condition (arthrofibrosis) now traveling to Switzerland from all over Europe, he established the European Knee Arthrofibrosis Center, hosted within the Sports Rehab PT clinics. The instructor is also a Clinical Researcher hired by the Service of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Department of Surgery, EOC, Lugano (Switzerland).
